Hands-on with Google Spreadsheets V1.1.4

I played with Google Spreadsheets for a few minutes, since they’ve sent me my invite. Anyone want to try collaborating on something?

This is the main interface. Here I’ve typed some text into cell B2, highlighted it light yellow, and then selected four cells which makes them appear in light blue.

This is the Google Spreadsheets file menu. It allows you to download files not only as .xls (Microsoft Excel) and .csv (comma-separated values), but also as HTML (sheet only). For .xls, it supports multiple sheets. However, it doesn’t seem to have formulas or charts, so what happens if I try to open an Excel file that has chart(s)?

It just throws them out and pretends they didn’t exist.

Whoops: turns out that Google Spreadsheets does support Formulas (and sorting, too).

But the emphasis, of course, is always on sharing. Neat stuff. I give it 3 out of 5 stars as a product because it doesn’t support charts and it doesn’t relate very directly with Google’s core mission (and as I’ve talked about before, Google search currently sucks in comparison to Yahoo). However, as an online Spreadsheets app, it’s an excellent implementation and feels very polished. Good job, Google.
