Garett Rogers reports that Google has released Account Authentication. It allows installed applications or web applications to: (1) Be accessed by Google Accounts or (2) access Google Accounts. The program is available in two flavors: (1) Account Authentication for Installed Applications or (2) Account Authentication Proxy for Web Applications.

They’ve just posted the announcement on the Official Google Blog about the Google Gadget Contest, in which you write a new gadget for Google Desktop Search 4. The search utility just came out of beta, and they’re offering up to $5,000 for you to create a gadget.

Infoworld doesn’t think Google is innovating:
Perhaps, like Microsoft, [Google] will find that some innovation doesn’t come from Stanford PhDs. Because, at its core, the best innovation solves human needs, and not many humans are engineers. It may be time for Google to start “scratching” a wider variety of “itches.”
