Google Joga: Google Partners with Nike

The new site can be found at joga.com and you can login with your Google login.

Google and Nike have launched a joint soccer site that hopes to combine the success of social networking sites like Myspace.com with the passion for the world’s most popular sport.

Joga.com, inspired by the Portuguese term joga bonita (play beautifully) is an invitation-only website that aims to connect football fans around the world with content in 14 languages available in 140 countries.

The Internet search leader and the world’s leading sporting goods maker have been working on the site for eight months.

The free network allows members to create websites, communities and profile pages, send e-mails, photos, and video clips, and access content about individual footballers like Nike’s sponsored athletes Ronaldino or US soccer prodigy Freddy Adu.

If the site succeeds, the partners will create similar networking sites for basketball, baseball, skateboarding, and other sports, officials said.

‘As we saw the social networks grow in the US and elsewhere, we asked, ‘What if this was around sports, a specific sport?” says Trevor Edwards, Nike’s vice president for global brand management. ‘We are really excited about it.’
